    Having just seen the fantastic BBC series Tales from the Green Valley, I know how much work was involved in threshing the grains. The flat basket marked fig. 13 is a winnowing basket, which was used to throw the threshed grain into the air. The wind blows away the lighter, unwanted stuff and the heavier grains falls back into the basket.
