Death of Captain James Cook – George Carter 1783

Posted by on August 14, 2012

George Carter (1737–1794)

It’s getting pretty naval around here…   I am not including the native side in my detail as I have no idea how correct this artist maybe on that aspect.

Detail: sailor clothing, marines, boats, muskets, slops, striped trousers, handkerchief, sword, hair, hats, muskets, sailor

Captain Cook was killed in Hawaii in February 1779. The natives that are shown here are depicted more like Africans or Melanasians from New Guinea rather than Polynesian islanders from Hawaii.
